I don't know if anyone saw it, but here's an Some interesting facts about the Kolb brothers.

They set up shop at the Grand Canyon in the early 1900's, just as the tourist industry was getting underway at the canyon. (the railroad had just arrived a few years before)

There was no water at the rim at that point, the nearest water was a cow pond in the woods miles away. Fresh water was brought up from the river by mules, so the Kolbs set up a developing shack at Indian Gardens to take advantage of the clean water source there. The Kolbs would take your picture on your mule as you entered the canyon. They would then run down past the mule train to Indian Gardens to develop the negatives. By the time you and your mule got to Indian Gardens you were able to choose which pictures you wanted prints of. You would continue on the river and then return to the rim for a complete day of travel. Meanwhile, the Kolbs would run back up to their shop on the rim, produce your prints and have them ready for you to purchase at days end. Quite the entrepreneurs I'd say! The round trip was a distance of 9.5 miles with something like 3300' of vertical distance.

If you can catch this show again on Channel 8, I would recommend taking the time to watch.

Somewhere we have a picture of my grandfather on my dad's side--a round chubby Swede--sitting on one of those mules around 1918 I was told. Is that the right time for the Kolbs? The photo looks professional.
