Aspen Marshall Loop Sunday May 16
I’m taking the wife and kids out for a kiddie hike this Sunday on Mt. Lemmon. At 3.7 miles, this one is at the upper end of what my kids can handle, so we’ll likely be taking a lunch break at the halfway point to give them a rest. I decided to post this in case any HAZers with (or without) kids want to tag along and make a day out of it. We’ll probably leave Mesa at about 7am, so give probably 2.5-3 hours to get to the TH.

Sweet hike, you'll enjoy it! (Although, truth be told, I haven't seen it since the Aspen fire, which was named after the Aspen Trail...
) However, all the trails have been reworked, and it should be fun. Take some photos so I can see what it looks like now.

Make sure to call the nice folks @ the Coronado National Forest because the gate leading into the Marshall Gulch picnic area/trailhead was closed for a while this spring due to storm damage. It's probably cool right now, but better safe than sorry.

If it is closed, you can still park on the side of the road leading to the picnic area. The Aspen trail's really seen a lot of regrowth, at least as of last fall.

There are just two switchbacks left. And another half-mile to the destination...

Don't bother. (Or at least take anything they tell you with a grain of salt). Apparently working for the FS doesn't actually require you to know anything about the status of anything on the forest. In my experience, A-S is the worst in the state, followed by Coronado. Coconino and Tonto are a bit better, and I don't have any personal experiences with Prescott or Kaibab, but I wouldn't expect much more.Jim Lyding wrote:Make sure to call the nice folks @ the Coronado National Forest because the gate leading into the Marshall Gulch picnic area/trailhead was closed for a while this spring due to storm damage.
