Canyonlands Fall extravaganza

Post by writelots »

I'd really like to try to do this one over Thanksgiving, especially since I've got a Grand Canyon trip on Veteran's Day weekend... If that's not doable, I don't think I'll be able to pull it off this fall. Too many other things on the calendar.

Thoughts???

Thanksgiving Day itself (and the day before), I'll be cooking. But other days in that general time frame would interest me.

Thanksgiving I'll be in Reno, unless things change drastically. The only time of the year I get to spend with my side of the family.

Whoa, fall, already!? Can't we enjoy our brief summer in these pats before it goes by too fast?

Well, when the drive to the trailhead is a full 8 hours north of Page, plans need to be laid early...

Depends which part of Canyonlands. Suggest the OP clarify:
Needles, Island in the Sky, or the Maze?

The Maze is listed as the trailhead of choice in the OP. I-Sky is also close to 7 hours from Page.

News Flash: After doing some research into the trails in the Maze area, and looking at other factors such as driving time and what not, I've decided that it may be just a bit too ambitious to do much up in Canyonlands on that weekend - particularly if we're waiting until AFTER the turkey dinner to really hit the trail.

So, instead, I remembered some talk about the Owl and Fish Creek Canyons on Cedar Mesa and I thought, yeah, that's the ticket! If we hit the trail late in the day on Friday, we'll still have plenty of time to see the sites along Owl Creek and hopefully camp near the waterfall or Nevills Arch. We can drop-pack at the confluence on Saturday and head further downstream to the other ruins, maybe even up McCloyd Canyon to see some of those. Camping somewhere along Fish Creek on the way back up, and getting an early start on driving out on Sunday. Should be just in time for a late lunch at Mexican Hat or Gouldings, then home (for those who wish). I might go up on Turkey Day itself and explore more up on the Mesa that day, meeting people Friday at the TH...

I know it's not Canyonlands, but it's at least 4 hours closer for me each way - that makes a BIG difference between spending the weekend driving and spending it playing on the trail! :y:

Going to have to cancel this from my end. Just too much going on this semester now. I love having the work, but hate having to sacrifice the hiking!

I guess the Canyonlands aren't going anywhere. I'll be thinking about new plans for a bit.
