I couldn't get the trailer to come up on my phone. Is this the guy that took off on his own w/out telling anyone where or when and had to cut his arm off with a dull pocket knife? Then he pretty much went on the talk show circuit wrote a book to make money to buy cool climbing attachments for his fake arm. :?

Aron Ralston signed at my store when his book first came out. He was a pretty nice guy and I give him mad props for reading the excerpt about cutting his arm off in front of a squeamish crowd of 300. If I ever have to cut my own arm off-- you bet I'm gonna capitalize on that! :)

Saw the movie today "127 Hours" at the Harkins Camelview, near the Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall. There were a few times when I said to myself "OK, lets move this along". Very thought provoking especially with Joe still missing. If you're into hiking/canyoneering and have followed the 2003 story...go see it. I have not read the book.

I really enjoyed the book. Looks like I'll be waiting until it's on dvd to see the movie, as it's not playing within 100 miles of me. :?

I try to give people who truly want to explore the benefit of the doubt because I share in that spirit. It seems like he matured out of the experience which is all anyone can hope for a young guy who made a big mistake, I suppose.

Jeff, I agree....he had 5 days to reflect on his life..the good, the bad the ugly. He got a big wake up call and is making the best of it.

He had a long time to think about it, but what's wierd is when you are dying really quick (or about to), like in seconds, or even portions of seconds, how things slow down. Not just speaking about "what they say", but personal experience sky-diving. Plus it makes for a great war story afterwards. Just no book deals, or even "guest appearances" on reality TV for me. (My favorite from TruTV is when some guy with a helmet cam burns in. He's rolling around on the ground, not dead, moaning, when his buddy, also with a helmet cam, comes up and offers this classic: "Dude, you alright?" :sl: )

Just saw the movie. :o :o :o Always carry a sharp knife and tell someone where you are going. SPOT would have been useful in that situation. But I don't think SPOT was around in 2003, was it? Now I think I'm going to read the book. Very interesting.

Doubt SPOT would have helped in that narrow canyon.

I finally watched it. They did a pretty good job of being impartial, IMHO. He made mistakes that anyone could have. You do this sort of stuff long enough and you are bound to get less and less attentive to the basics, etc. Show me an outdoor enthusiast who has never had any kind of near-miss or incident and I'll show you a newbie! ;)
