Collins to the San Juan?
Anyone possibly interested in a Collins-Grand Gulch trip down towards the San Juan? Not dog friendly. Would be 5 days, 4 night, with 4 days of ~7 mile hiking and one day (day 3) dayhiking about 10 miles from camp to the river and back. Permits wouldn't be open until January (and I haven't run this by my wife yet...
). Just seeing if anyone would be interested in this for mid March.

Re: Collins to the San Juan?
Rob, if it is NOT on the 12th, but starts right after the 12th, say around the 14th or 16th, then I am there! NAU spring break is from the 12th to the 20th of March. On the 12th, though, I have other plans.

Great trip, one of the best sections of that canyon system. I did it a few years back. Check out some of the side canyons if you have time.

Interested but will depend on dates you pick ...I have some hard commit towards late March that will prevent me from going

Re: Collins to the San Juan?
I'd be interested in doing this trip in lieu of the Rainbow Bridge excursion (wish I could do both - guess I just need to become a local...). Won't have to worry about filling up my week with this one! Anytime in March is looking good so far.

Re: Collins to the San Juan?
I would definitely be interested in this backpack trip...spring break is best. But could make it work the further in advance I know.

Re: Collins to the San Juan?
Everyone's spring break is different throughout AZ. Mine, for NAU, starts March 12th, but I am going kayaking on March 12th. Which is why I am hoping Rob will run the trip later in that particular spring break, starting maybe the 14th or 16th.
Interestingly, my employer, Flagstaff Unified School District, coincides their spring break with NAU's. My previous employer, the school district in Springerville, doesn't bother to coincide theirs with either the local CC or NAU or anyone else, which used to get pretty annoying.
I notice ASU and UA are also the same week. So I guess it is just the school districts that get squirrelly, for those of us working for school districts.
A word of advice: Don't go to Lake Havasu City or Rocky Point on the 12th of March! ;)

Re: Collins to the San Juan?
Probably can't make it then, since there are no weekend days, etc. Oh, well.

Re: Collins to the San Juan?
Talked with the wife today - she seemed less than thrilled. "I really think you should wait to commit to something like that."
So - will continue to talk with, but forecast is not 100% positive.

That's OK with me. It will be a couple months before anyone pays attention to what I claim are plans.

Re: Collins to the San Juan?

Husbands can be just as bad, if their wives are backpackers and they aren't.
It is so great, now that I am living in Flag (probably temporarily, but oh, well) to not have to consult with anyone regarding my backpacking plans. Or any other plans, for that matter.

Just curious... does your spouse, instead of saying "Have a great time", ask "Is your insurance policy paid up?" just before you leave on a trip...
