Salt Trail Cyn to LCR

Post by RickVincent »

I'm planning this as a two day expedition for Sat-Sun, September 24-25. I have a friend coming in from Pennsylvania that weekend, so the dates are locked. My first trip to this area. It would be a bonus to have someone along who knows the route or at least a few extra eyes to spot cairns. Hike difficulty rating: 4 (advanced)

CHOCOLATE RAPIDS ALERT!! IF rains proceed hike date and water is chocolaty brown upon arrival...unlikely that we will stay overnight and possibly convert to day trip. Come on turquoise blue!!

Plan: (times approximate)

Leave Phx area at 4am.
Meet at trailhead around 9:30am.
Scramble down to LCR.
Set up Camp and eat dinner at LCR.
Hike out Sunday morning around 8am.

This is my gym. I have to travel down a bumpy road to get there. There are no treadmillls, no machines, and no personal trainers. I walk..I run..I breathe the fresh air. I can go any time I want, as much as I want and there is no membership fee.

Dangit! I have things to do in Page that weekend! This one has been on my list for a while...

Hey Rick - late September should give you a good chance at catching blue water, but I'd keep an eye the USGS gage for the LCR below Cameron http://waterdata.usgs.gov/az/nwis/uv/?s ... 0065,00060 it should be at or near zero for at least a week prior. Be a drag to get all the way there and have brown water (looks like a big slug of brown water is going through there right now). And honestly, I'd say the drive to the trail head is more difficult than finding the hiking route down. The attached PDF has a description that I took from one of the HAZ trip reports, I've tweaked it a bit so it's a little more accurate.

Umm, isn't there a Steeler game that Sunday morning?

EDIT: Nevermind, just checked the sked. might be tight to get back by 5pm, though.

Might miss the first half. October 23rd is the one you don't want to miss. Steelers are coming to the valley to beat the Cards.

Chris,
You don't need to get ALL the way back, Maloney's Tavern in Flag is a Stillers bar! Plus, you are BOUND to be thirsty by the time you get to Flag.

I have a software upgrade scheduled that weekend so I need to be around that weekend. I'll keep this one on my "wish list". Have a great time!
