Hi all. I just found this site. Looks like a great resource.
I am planing a day trip this Sunday (11-4) and was thinking about doing Brown's Peak. My goal would be to reach the summit, but I wouldn't be too disappointed if I decided not to climb the scree shoot as I am going alone. With that said, I just want to make sure I am not getting in over my head. I am 38 and while I am not super in shape, I am not doing too bad for a desk job holder. A couple weeks ago my wife and I went up to Sedona and hiked Loy Canyon almost all the way to the Secret Mountain trail and back. I had no issues doing that. I grew up hiking a lot in northern AZ and feel that I am solid on my feet. So based on what I have read I am not worried about the scree.
Any opinions / feedback welcome.
Thanks.

Re: Brown's Peak for a "beginner"?
I would say Brown's is okay for a "beginner" OR solo ... but not a beginner solo.
But it's a good hike up to the saddle, and you could at least check out the scree chute ... just don't let summit fever get you in trouble.

Re: Brown's Peak for a "beginner"?
In general I'd agree with cactuscat so my thoughts would center around...
How much of a beginner are you?
Have you climbed any steep slopes before?
Are you ok with heights/steep slopes?
For me Brown's Peak was the first real climb I ever did and I didn't feel it was that big a deal hiking it solo... and I'm one a bit uncomfortable with steep slopes/heights. But as cactuscat said, don't let the eagerness to summit overrule common sense.
Hmmm... I've climbed Brown's Peak at least once a year since 2004 and I just realized I haven't done it yet this year... I'll have to check my schedule (actually Tracey's since I have no schedule) and maybe I can join you.

I have climbed steep slopes before, as a kid. But like I said, I feel very solid on my feet and the idea does not bother me. Let me know if you think you can join.CannondaleKid wrote:In general I'd agree with cactuscat so my thoughts would center around...

I have a wonderful family who would keep me from taking much of a chance to reach the summit.

So CannondaleKid and I did this hike. It was a really great hike with perfect weather. I am really glad he came along as I probably wouldn't have made the summit by my self.

Decisionmaking and action should only be informed by, not subject to, healthy, reasonable concern.
That being said, anything worth doing is worth doing to excess.

Thank you, Steve! If I was alone I just may not have continued to the summit this trip either.
Yes, it was the perfect day.
I hope you enjoyed our 'tour' through the El Oso Mine along with the 4-wheeling.
