Kartchner Caverns

Post by melhaney »

Hi everyone! So this is not really hiking related (therefore I'm under the appropriate heading I suppose!) but I just went through Kartchner Caverns yesterday and just had to share how magnificent it was! For all my fellow outdoor lovers.............you really should check this out! Kartchner Caverns is about 45 minutes out of Tucson - just past the huge bustling town of Benson, AZ. The cave was discovered in the '70s by two cavers. Long story short, they kept the cave a secret for quite some time then included the Kartchner family in on the secret. What a wonderful job they have done to preserve it. The caverns were turned into a state park and are now available for public tours at $14 a pop. Worth every penny. The 'large room' is only available to private groups right now and apparently it's pretty pricey, but they're hoping to open this section by the end of the year. Anyways..............without rambling too much, I highly recommend this place. It's one of the rare active caves still around and it's right in our backyard! The formations that drops of water can make over thousands of years are spectacular. You have to make reservations though and they're already booked through May! Yikes!

Hope everyone else is having a great weekend - soak up this great weather while we can!
