Re: Sierra Blanca, NM?
You are hiking up from the ski area? If you find no one else, I'd go over with you on Friday... been 40 years since I've been up on top.

Friday or Saturday is fine, and yes the ski area. I would like to visit it before winter comes in.

That sure sounds good. Unfortunately, I am unable to travel far for a couple of more weeks. Would like to revisit that Range, it's been a long time....

I don't know if this will get to happen this calendar year, but it's raining with low clouds up there, as seen through the Apache's web cam.

I rescheduled for the 22nd. We'll see.

What is the point in hiking a new peak if you can't see anything and it's going to be miserable?

Re: Sierra Blanca, NM?
They are are fools. Over moneyed, egocentric, trophy mountain hiking, peak bagging fools. Thats why every year, some of them die in pursuit of being able to buy the T-Shirt and actually being able to make the legitimate claim of "I was there". Still, that is their choice.
I'd rather do a fun class 3 to 5.4 scramble to climb on a 12,000 to 14,500' mountain peak in California with awesome weather, than come within 500 feet of the summit of Everest, or any miserably high 8,000 meter peak. In truth, I don't care if I ever get higher than Whitney, that's just me, and another topic all together. Like you said about driving up there, and it not being worth it to you to hike that from the east, I want nice weather to make the 160 mile RT drive worth it.

Re: Sierra Blanca, NM?
I agree. I stayed up last night till 3am reading the two books about the 1996 disaster on Everest... the idiocy of so many "trophy" efforts, and the misguided national pride too intermingled combines to make for a very "less than" situations. I'm reading the book tonight about Everest : "High Crime"... addressing the $$$$$$$ issues.

If they are opening the ski lodge on this day... that might be a very bad day to be over there!!!

Re: Sierra Blanca, NM?
So, I had seen Thursday as the opening day, but now they are saying Friday the 7th is their opening day. They make snow.
So, I might like to head up next week. I can do the first if someone is seriously interested, but if not, I will go earlier. If I can.
