New Years 4+ Day backpack suggestions

Post by mtnman33 »

I'm looking for suggestions on doing a backpack trip over New Years. My plan is to arrive early Wednesday afternoon and hike in a few miles and then need to be back to the trailhead by mid-morning on Monday. This assumes driving time from Colorado to Phoenix area.

I'll just have my dog so I can do 10-15 miles a day. I like to be able to fill up on water about once a day. I've been looking at either the Superstitions or Mazatzal Wilderness. Any other good winter areas? From the Club Cabin hike description, I'm concerned about cattle in the Mazatazal. My dog loves to roll in cow pies. Also a lot of the Mazatzal hikes don't list winter as a good time to hike.

I've never been to the Mazatzal but I've been to the Superstitions twice. Once similar length trip I started Reavis Trailhead and did a big loop to Reavis Ranch, Rogers Trough Trailhead, Woodbury Trailhead, Rogers Canyon, Frog Tanks Trail with a side trip cross-country from Tortilla Pass to Hoolie Bacon trail and back JF Trail. Another trip I started in Haunted Canyon and did Bull Basin, Rock Creek, and Pinto West trails with some cross-country stuff. I had planned on to the Pinto Peak Trail but got sick the first night and my lengths started getting really congested so I had to bail. I haven't been in the western part of the Superstitions so some of that seems interesting if I can find enough water.
