GC Throwback

Post by chumley »

From the AZCentral Throwback Photos slideshow I saw the attached photo with this non-descript caption: "Llamas at the Grand Canyon Sept. 14, 1985."

Anybody recognize specifically where in the canyon it was taken?

The pic was taken at the Coconino Overlook along the North Kaibab Trail. I've never been there. I had to do some research just like the old pixel trivia days. :D

Interesting! I'm pretty sure only horses and mules are allowed now, maybe donkeys as well. It's generally known that horses are not fond of llamas, and lord knows what they'd do if they saw a camel. I would not want to be riding a horse the first time he sees a camel.

"equines": horses, mules, and donkeys/burros are ok.

Prohibited are llamas, goats, and other non-equine stock animals.

Know anybody with a pet zebra? I think that would be a sight to see.

There's always the Tijuana Zebra, a little-known species!

If you want to dig into the archives, theres photos of a 4WD truck halfway down to Phantom, with about 2 inches of room to spare to the side before it goes over the edge. As far as I know it drove all the way down and back out with no incidents.

@Kwai Chang
In the early '80s they had a Jeep at Phantom Ranch to assist with building a new septic system. It was floated in via the Colorado and then flown out by helicopter.
