Southwestern Colorado

Post by RickVincent »

Looking for best recommendations for hikes and/or kayak destinations in the Pagosa Springs, South Fork, Lake City and surrounding areas. I'm heading up in late September for a few days. What are the "can't miss" places to see for a first time visitor to the area?
This is my gym. I have to travel down a bumpy road to get there. There are no treadmillls, no machines, and no personal trainers. I walk..I run..I breathe the fresh air. I can go any time I want, as much as I want and there is no membership fee.

Consider stopping over in the La Plata sub-range west of Durango.

We spent a week in Pagosa Springs a couple years back. Absolutely gorgeous country.

We enjoyed hikes to: Piedra Falls, Piedra Ice Fissures, Opal Lake, Four-mile falls, as well as a quick side trip to Treasure Falls (just off the highway). All are relatively short day hikes, with Four Mile falls being the longest, at about 6 mi. Mesa Verde is also a cool place to explore. You can see my triplogs on these.
