It's pretty easy to make a mistake up there. Just glad everyone including the rescuers got off the mountain safe.

I was listening to the Comms on MCSO Search. They have a Black hawk from the Guard assisting and they are still working on getting them off the peak.

Huh!? The video was shot yesterday afternoon! With a helicopter and rescuers on scene then you are telling me they spent the night up there and are still there!!?BEEBEE wrote:they are still working on getting them off the peak.
Edit: I just read that yes, in fact they decided to stay overnight. Wow.

That is what it sounds like they are trying to decided the best way to lift to avoid hitting the rock face due to the high winds.

Re: MCSO rescue team helps man, daughter off Four Peaks Mountain
I don't know anything about helicopters or rescues, so excuse my uneducated "thinking out loud" --- but I wonder if you would be able to actually land a helicopter on the top of Browns if you wanted to? Rather than having to use a rescue basket. It's pretty open and while not perfectly smooth, there is a reasonably large surface area up there.
You'd have to move the people a little bit off the peak first though?

@chumley
I have witnessed down right amazing things by Blackhawks and their operators, however, that being said not sure if they can safely land on Browns..
A great bird, but Blackhawks do have a slightly tainted view by many in armed service and are collectively referred to as "crash hawks" by many..so might be a little dicy up there right now with the high winds..

Re: MCSO rescue team helps man, daughter off Four Peaks Mountain
I am a fixed wing guy who also has a Helicopter rating however my Rotor experience is limited. I can tell you that high winds at high elevations can cause issues with control with the aircraft that for an experienced pilot which I am sure they all are can handle, but in this case since no one appears to be in a life threatening situation there is little need to create one.

They've updated that news piece, and show them helping them down the rock face with ropes, and say they were taken to hospital to check them out. So, they are down safely. Thank goodness no one died.
This has been a sad year for hiker deaths in Arizona.

Did I miss it - have they said exactly WHY the pair were stranded? It didn't seem like there was an injury - so what, were they just lost/confused /scared about the route down?
