New to the area!
Hey everyone! I just moved to the Phoenix area from northern Michigan. I did quite a bit of weekend backpacking trips back home but it seems to be a whole new ball game out here, a bit overwhelming really! I'd really like to get out on some trips but I don't really know where the good spots are, when the best times to go are, or if there's different gear I need/don't need out here. I wouldn't say I'm a beginner but I'd like to try something a little easier for my first trip here to see how I do on different terrain and higher temps. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Maybe even someone would be willing to take me out on a trip and show me around a bit! Thanks, Dan

Re: New to the area!
Danno0209, as someone that moved here in October but has hiked ~400 miles since, welcome. It seems overwhelming but it really isn't. As you have discovered, HAZ is a WONDERFUL resource. Send me a PM and maybe next weekend I could take you out somewhere.

I envy people who are getting to hike in AZ for the first time. There is unlimited fun to be had.

Since you live in Scottsdale, the McDowells are a good close place to hike. Early morning the trails on the west side are shaded. Bell Pass, Windgate, Tom's Thumb, many more.

I felt like the proverbial "Jew wandering in the desert" for nigh on 40 years until I moved to the desert in '93 (Tucson). It's been the Land of Milk and Honey since. Well, at least since I discovered hikearizona.com in aught '8.

Yes Arizona can get milk and honey sticky but HAZ does help you ease through it.SAMBA wrote:It's been the Land of Milk and Honey since. Well, at least since I discovered hikearizona.com in aught '8.

I think it's only a matter of time. The countdown hasn't quite started, but it won't be long.Jim_H wrote:Just think, you, too, could be a new transplant to Arizona!big_load wrote:I envy people who are getting to hike in AZ for the first time. There is unlimited fun to be had.
