Mogollon Canyons

Post by ddgrunning »

I've been reading Born to Run by Christopher McDougall about the Tarahumara tribe of ultra runners in Mexico's Sierra Madre Mtns. As a side story, the author refers to Richard Fischer as an expert in hiking/exploring the "Mogollon Canyons" in Arizona. Never heard of them, unless this is intended to be some kind of generic description of any canyon that has its beginning on the Mogollon Rim. Anyone heard that terminology used?

It appears he did a lot of exploring and descents of numerous canyons that enter the major drainages on the Rim. These drainages would include Sycamore, Oak Creek, West Clear Creek, Secret, Woods, etc. I don't know specifically which ones he may have done, but examples listed here on HAZ that I would say fall under "Mogollon Canyons" would be ones like Little LO, Babes Hole, James, Illusions, Bear, Sundance, etc.

I have been very fortunate to be the first American to explore the earth’s deepest canyon in Tibet; help the canyons of the Mogollon Rim, like West Clear Creek, to get National Wilderness designation...

Three decades ago Krakauer did a piece in Outside on Fisher (sic) and the "Muggy-Un" Canyons.
It includes West Clear, Salome, Hells Gate, Cibecue and a few more including "Crystal" which I believe was a pseudonym for San Carlos Cyn to keep it "secret" at the time.
I think Fischer was probably the first to descend some of the canyon routes. I first went to Salome Jug (and others) after I read the article!
