I 'd like to think that if this sort of event ever happened, that we would maintain the knowledge to work metals, and probably stay at least in the industrial age, say pre-computer WW2 era, at least.

I was most surprised to read that a Carrington-sized event occurred in July 2012, but narrowly missed Earth. Had it hit scientists claim we would still be dealing with the effects today.
