What's the best way to catch a Mountain Goat?

Post by sneakySASQUATCH »

This came on my feed as I was uploading the Mountain Goat videos from yesterday's hike. Interesting process right up my alley.

Seems like it would be terribly traumatic for the poor beasts.
I'm not sure what my spirit animal is, but I'm confident it has rabies.

I believe they kill more people per year than bears. Or at least in the ballpark, maybe.

That video bothered me... :(

Me, too. And I've handled loads of wild animals (mostly birds). I've never captured large mammals, but from what I've seen, the "biologists" who do that work treat the animals pretty harshly. I don't know if this is true for goats, but when they capture deer, they sometimes want to know how old the animal is. The preferred method for aging them is to yank a tooth out and count the rings, just like with trees. I hope this is less painful to deer than it was for me when I had my wisdom teeth out (but I doubt it).

On top of that, mountain goats aren't even native to Utah. The only reason that the state of Utah is even messing around with them is so that they can sell hunting licenses to bring in big $$$$. There is no scientific basis for having them in the state.

@chumley
They probably are unhabituated to humans from the event, and I could see how darting them could be a problem on that type of terrain.
