Even more solitude is expected there due to the chances of encountering the Scary BushWhack deep in the Mazatzal Wilderness. Reliable sources have reported its presence there and are trying to assemble some who will hunt it to extinction.
Others should stay out of mountains with drainages named Deadman Creek. Skip those tall spring waterfalls on red Mazatzal quartzite, and bypass the distant views of the Mogollon Rim, the Supersition Mountains, San Francisco Peaks, and Phx's South Mountain, all on the same hike. Avoid the shade from the nearest Douglas fir trees to Phoenix which are on the north side of Mt. Peeley. The tall Ponderosa pines could fall over onto the trail and you would not only have to slow down, hurting your reported average hiking speed, you would also have to figure out on your own, how to get around the tree. There might be a Scary BushWhack in it.
Besides, who would want to have to walk on a hot, steep trail when they can just as easily drive on the paved road to Mt. Ord? On foot in the Mazatzals, if you start to perspire or get a scratch on your leg, immediately turn back for your personal safety, as those afflictions may worsen if you continue. You will be safer if you stay in your car.
Another reason to avoid the area, is that some places there used to have no cell phone coverage which could easily ruin your day. Be smart and instead go to the park early to get the best picnic table with a shade cover and a clean grill. Avoid the chances of encountering a Scary BushWhack deep in the Mazatzal Wilderness.
Edward Abbey wrote "It was the roughest, rockiest, ruggedest, reddest, hottest, driest, scratchiest, thorniest, least developed, least inhabited, most deserted, most forlorn, most God forsaken, corner of the State of Utah. It is the best I've seen, so far." We don't know if Ed visited the Mazatzal Wilderness.
