winter hiking

Post by skiddog »

Hello from Colorado! I wondered if anyone could give me some advice or suggestions for January hiking...primarily around Tucson, Phoenix, Sedona...looking for lower elevation, snow-free areas. Are there any parts of the Arizona Trail that are snow free?

Thanks a lot for your help....appreciate it

Just find the areas below about 5,000 feet and there won't be much, if any, snow.

In Tucson we get snow on Mount Lemmon which will affect Passages 10-12. Overnight temps can get cold (we sometimes get freeze warnings to cover outside plants), and mornings are chilly, but during the day the temps do warm a little (60s and 70s).

Sedona: Capitol Butte, Morning Glory Spire, Boynton Canyon, Bear Mountain if snow free, stuff around Bell Rock.
Phoenix: Camelback, Piestewa Peak, and surrounding preserve trails, Peak 5024, the Superstition Ridgeline, and trails at South Mountain, Quartz Peak in the Estrella Mountains, Big Horn Peak (off trail)...
Tucson: Pusch Peak, Mount Wasson via any route, Cat Peak, Romero Pools, Finger Rock trail to the overlook, Aqua Caliente Peak....
