New to Site - Looking for Ruins?

Post by azruins »

I am new to this site. We have been hiking to various Indian Ruins in Arizona. We have found that most ruins are guarded secrets. My wife and I have found a number in the Verde Valley and Bloody Basin area and have them mapped with GPS coordinates as well as have recommendations on how to get there. I will be GLAD to share these as I fully realize these sites do not belong to me and in some cases the access roads and site themselves use our tax money for maintenance and I don't believe it is right to use our money to keep us out. I do adhere to the rules about collecting etc. and not leaving any trash. Most maps I have found are VERY misleading to the actual locations.

No one is trying to keep anyone out in any legal sense, if the sites are on public land. However, it is a kind of protection via use of no advertisement, because the agencies responsible do not have the resources to fully protect sites. The sites that are well-known become trampled, stuff disappears, etc. I feel it is better to let people do a lot of homework to get to some of these sites, rather than make them easy to find. In southern Utah, making sites easy to find has led to them being basically trashed.

Same goes for Arizona. I'm in full agreement. Telling one person always seems harmless but then you have to realize that everyone they told and then everyone those people told are all because of you. There are plenty to be found with a quick internet search. The others should remain hunted for. There's something awesome about that and I don't think it should be stolen from future generations.

Many ruins are well known. And we expect HAZ members are responsible enough to respect them. On every ruins hike description page, Joe lists the rules for visiting Ruins sites.

Go to Books at the bottom of the homepage and you will find HIking Ruins Seldom Seen by Dave Wilson. Last I heard he was still a special in-law for HAZ
https://hikearizona.co...

Go to the Purple search box on the home page and type Ruins. I got 281 matches for ruins in AZ. I'm not sure what order they are listed. You could expand the search for ruins in UT, NM, CA, PR, etc and you will undoubtedly find something. [Aside: You can also use this purple search option to find the best Mexican Food or Craft Beer in AZ :) ]

Also, if you go to the FIND page and click on "more options" you will find a box for Ruins that you can toggle as Yes No or No Preference.

One of my favorites is Keet Seel.[ description ] This will show you the Rules for visiting Ruins.
