Habitat: It prefers slopes and forest openings from foothills to moderate mountain elevations, according to the Burke Herbarium Image Collection. Etymology: The name "Clematis" comes from the Greek word "clem," meaning vine. Subspecies/varieties: It is a variety of Clematis occidentalis. Note: The plant contains protoanemonin, which can cause skin irritation or gastrointestinal issues if ingested. Do not rub on your belly or ingest. Native American tribes have used the plant for various medicinal purposes, including poultices for foot ailments and hair washes. The seed floss can be used as tinder for starting fires.
