Megaceryle alcyon

Habitat:Full-time resident of much of the U.S. with the exception of the Upper Midwest and Northern Plains where it spends the summers only. Winters in Florida and the Southwest, including Southern California. Inhabits Lakes, Rivers and Saltwater Estuaries.

Description:Dove sized Bird with Blue/Gray above, White below. Dagger-like Bill and bushy Crest. Male has Blue/Gray Breast Band, Female is similar, but also with Chestnut Belly Band.

Comments:When prey is spotted in the Water, it can hover above like a Tern.
