Trail signs often mark junctions and mileages, specifying trail names and numbers and direction of travel. Forest Service signs are frequently wooden with engraved lettering. In busy areas they may be reflective metal. National Parks may have more elaborate signs. State and Local signage may vary considerably. Additional trail markings include blazes, chevrons, plaques, paint, or other indicators of the direction of travel.
