Tempe Town Lake, Arizona - Maricopa County | Lake |
A manmade lake constructed in 1999 along the Salt River channel as it passes through the city of Tempe. The 2-mile long lake is contained by an inflatable dam at the west end, halfway between Mill Avenue and Priest Drive. The dam has a pedestrian bridge that links the north and south banks.
Tempe Town Lake is surrounded by open space and features miles of paved walking/biking paths, plenty of grass and shade trees. Tempe Beach Park lies on the south shore of the lake just west of Mill Avenue in downtown Tempe and is the frequent location for concerts and other special events. The north shore features sand volleyball courts and a large marina, where recreational users can launch and store watercraft, (limited to electric motors only). The maximum depth of the lake is 19-feet, with an average depth of 13-feet. Water to fill the lake can come from Central Arizona Project canals or from natural storm runoff via the Indian Bend Wash or the Salt River itself if water is released from Granite Reef dam in Mesa.
