Common Names: aka Arctic Avens, or Alpine Avens
Habitat: In Arizona, only the high alpine areas of the San Francisco Peaks, and while I (Jim_H) haven't been there, it might be found on Baldy in eastern AZ. This very common alpine plant is found in the tundra areas of Colorado, New Mexico, and around moisture in the tundra areas of the Sierra Nevada in California. Probably common in the rest of the western state mountains above treeline.
Flowers: A simple yellow flower, born on a stalk.
Description: Low growing herbaceous plant, forming carpets of flowers and leaves. The leaves are compound. Frequently, the flower stalk has a reddish hue.
Comments: herbaceous perennial. Common on the San Francisco Peaks. Very common on the Humphrey's Summit Trail, and the last mile of the Weatherford Trail. While it isn't known specifically for this, the foliage turns red before turning brown for winter. Usually turns rapidly in September once the hard freezes begin after the monsoon fades away.
