Buteogallus anthracius

Common Names:
Habitat: Wooded canyons and riverside woodlands.
Description: A stocky black bird of prey, broad wings and a broad white band across the tail; cere and legs yellow.
Comments: When soaring it holds its wings flat and somewhat resembles Black Vulture. Voice: Shrill whistled screams. They often perch for long periods on a branch over water waiting for their prey to appear. This species is vulnerable to disturbances near it's nesting site and seems to be declining in the United States. Source: National Audobon Society Field Guide to Birds p 434
