coniferous woodlands on coarse, rocky soils; in pure stands or with pinyons and junipers

Cones
0.75 to 1.25 inches in diameter, dark reddish brown, becoming gray, usually remaining closed and attached to the tree

Description
a usually cone shaped, evergreen tree up to 90 feet tall with stout horizontal branches, it's thick trunk can be up to 6 feet in diameter; dull, gray-green scale like leaves; bark can be reddish brown, smooth, thin, and peeling, or dark brown, rough and furrowed, occasionally gray.

Comments
often grown for Christmas trees, or used in landscaping; Cypress Thicket near Payson, AZ is a great place to view a large stand of these trees
