Kohala refers to both a volcano and the northwest peninsula of the island of Hawaii. Specifically, Kohala Mountain is the oldest of the five major volcanoes that make up the island, with an estimated age of about one million years. The area surrounding the mountain is known as Kohala, encompassing the Kohala Coast, a dry western shore with golf courses and resorts.
