The Merritt Draw meadow has at least two of these fenced riparian areas to protect native plants from browsing animals. The fence was originally electric powered from a solar cell charged battery. The electrification is no longer functional but the fence continues to be maintained. As you can see from this picture it does keep the elk and deer out. Cattle are no longer grazed here since the Arizona Elk Society took over the forest service grazing lease.
