Many tall things in this rainforest. And there always seemed to be something growing up trunks. The trees all around the trail are covered in various epiphytes (plants that grow on other plants), so the surroundings are lush and jungle-like.

The northeastern coast of the Big Island is one of the wettest places on the planet, with the nearby city of Hilo receiving on average over 200 inches of rain a year.
