Many of the JTs are blooming. This doesn't happen often. We were lucky to enjoy this throughout our hikes.

However, the Mormons, trying to find their way back from California to Utah, used the Joshua Tree as a guide. They gave the plant its name in the early 19th century, because it reminded them of the biblical prophet Joshua, with his arms upraised in prayer. They saw this plant as a spiritual sign of welcome into the Promised Land.
