Sleeping in my truck made for easy take-down for me, so I helped Mike and Randy pack up and load up. The sun was starting to get hot when we finally fired our rigs up and left site 28 behind us. Our first stop on the mad loop was the Visitor's Center and Una Vida. We swung into the parking lot and walked into the yurt that is being used as a temporary Visitor's Center and bookstore. Randy, Mike, and myself picked up some literature about the canyon, and I nabbed a sticker and water bottle. Took a Cag shot by the trailhead and burned some shoe leather out onto the trail. Randy was already ahead of me, moving through the Great House plaza, while Mike had gone back to the truck to change into boots. I was happy enough in flip-flops. They had arch support and the hike wasn't long - I wasn't going to worry about it. I looped through the plaza and decided to climb the slope behind the ruin for the petroglyph view - I hadn't managed to do that on my last trip to Una Vida in 2003. From the petroglyph trail there was commanding view of the Great House and Fajada Butte. I could also see Mike and Randy walking back towards the truck. I guess they had opted not to check out the rock art. No worries. I headed back down the slope and made my way back towards the parking area, only pausing to stick my head into a couple of rooms on the back wall of Una Vida. By the time I got back to my truck, I discovered Mike and Randy had already left, moving on to the next trailhead - Hungo Pavi. Firing up the Explorer, I rolled down the windows and pushed the pedal down, heading in their wake towards the next set of ruins.
