| no partners | | We'd heard that this trail was pretty family-friendly, so we headed on up to check it out. I was excited to see my Quandary Peak, whose base this trail follows by the lake. Unfortunately, there were a few extra trail options, some of which were not trails. This wasn't entirely clear though until we ran out of trail. We took the route that follows the lake, but the actual trail continues away from it upwards, and into a gulch which is out of sight. We ended up climbing up several boulders before finally deciding that it was time to just head back to the cars. The kids and I were having a great time, but there were others who didn't like how "iffy" the route had become.
As of July 2010, the trail is clearer and extra segments have been blocked off by small gatherings of rocks. There is also a brand new warning sign on this route (put up by a local boy scout) since it is also the access to the dangerous west route on Quandary, so that makes it easy to figure out where you're supposed to go. The trail up to the gulch itself is in great condition and very safe; the fun part that continues on to Fletcher and Quandary doesn't begin until the trail disappears.  |
