We again took our tool box of brains, cliffhanger, pecker, ropes, and pool floats and took on some of the best canyoneering Arizona has to offer!
We encountered several downclimbs that we were successful navigating. Then we entered the narrows. Followed by a chute for a rappel under a chock stone. Then a slide into a pool where we couldn't see the next obstacle. We slid down the slide with the pool float. Paddled across a pool through a tight space where some of us transferred from one pool float to other and then sent the original pool float back to the next person via a pull cord. Then we used a hand-line to crawl out of the pool immediately finding ourselves at a rappel station. We also had one spot where we crossed a particularly smelly, really cold pool of canyon stew on top of a submersed log. The person in front of us had to weigh down the log so that we could balance on top and use a pool float to help maintain balance. I didn't have much success at balance and ended up sinking further into the pool than necessary.
We were freezing, so we took a break in the narrows at a nice spot and were treated to a few minutes of sun between clouds. Then we continued on with our rock hopping and down climbing out to West Clear Creek.
We submersed ourselves and our gear to rid it of the canyon stew and then continued up the lush trail to the rim.
Bear canyon wasn't as exciting as Sundance but it was a nice and beautiful way to end a great weekend of canyoneering! |
