| no partners | | Since I had to work today, I had to make this hike quick. Time was not on my side, so I rushed my shots and screwed most of them up. I started out the hike finding a baby hummingbird. It just sat there and did not move when I approached. I picked it up and thought that it was injured. I don't like photographing critters that are injured or dying, and I hate finding lost baby birds, because they are fragile. Since I thought it was going to die anyway, I planned to leave it in the shade and told myself if it is still there when I return, I'm going to take it home to my cat to enjoy (don't hate; the chicken you eat didn't die from a heart attack). But when I was about to set it down, it flew away, not before pooping in my hand though. I assume that there was a nest nearby, and it was developing its wing strength and was tired when I found it.
Next, I crossed Meridian Road and walked the power lines and sifted thru some trash looking for some critters. Suddenly, there was a hawk high on the metal tower (see bunny pic) that was screeching at me. It would not shut up. I screeched as if I was approach its nest or something. When I flipped over a cement block, I found out why it was screeching at me. I found what it wanted, which was a small bunny. I showed it to the hawk and was going to let it go to see if the hawk would take it. I was hoping to get video of it, but instead the hawk flew away and screeched at me again for the last time, thinking maybe I took its breakfast.
I then saw a small coachwhip (snake #55) and caught a female common side-blotch lizard. I did not get the pic because it played dead on me and when I loosened my grip, it escaped from my hand and into a hole. I then almost stepped on a family of quail chicks, which I thought was a small pile of rocks, and figured that was enough entertain for me in one day. |
