Seven nights in Nauders, Austria close to the frontier with Italy and Switzerland. A gentleman at our dinner table had done this hike on Saturday so we decided to do it the following day on our free day. We took the ski lift up to start the hike, the trail is clearly and well marked by yellow signs that denote the time it will take to hike to a particular point, but not the kilometers. Along the way the colors of the flag of Austria painted on rocks help to keep you on course. The lure to do this hike was the culmination point: the point where Austria, Italy and Switzerland meet. For the final segment the trail straddles the border between the former two. The alpine meadow views were nothing short of spectacular, snow capped Alps all around (indeed the view from our room at Hotel Bergblick featured some these same glorious peaks). Really not knowing how far we had to go, we pressed on. One steep section near the top, then plateaued, to the rock painted to show the dividing point of all three countries. My gps logged fifteen miles, sounds about right. Tree line in the Alps seems lower than that in say, Colorado. Our Dutch friend Robert who had done the hike mentioned "mountain hiking" as a precaution but it didn't feel like anything different but pristine, rare air at the western edge of the Austrian Alps. |
