| partners | | Denny had a week off work coming up and wanted to do something more than South Mountain. I told him I could take some time off too and join him. We threw out a few ideas and decided on the Rae Lakes area in the Sierras. Hopefully the weather would hold up and the mosquito population depleted from the summer time hoards. Kelly had been wanting to hike the Sierras too so she was happy to join us.
I hadn't been backpacking since I did the Chilkoot Trail when I lived in Alaska in the early 80's I was also concerned about the altitude as I have had problems with it in the past. We would be hiking up to 12,000 ft and camping above 10,000 ft. I struggled quite a bit the first day, but things went better after that.
The scenery is amazing even before you get to the trailhead (Onion Valley) and just keeps getting better the further you go. Denny and Kelly covered the details of the backpack well in their triplogs, so I won't.
Wonderful area but you have to work to get there, making it all that much more rewarding. Would love to go back and hit up some more of the less traveled areas like Sixty Lakes Basin and Gardner Lakes Basin.
Thanks to Denny and Kelly for everything you did and for being great hiking partners! You guys rock. |
