First stop we made was the Fish Creek Hill lookout. The pit stop was worthwhile- views and exciting exposure.
Down at Fish Creek, we were the only vehicle parked on the north side of the bridge. It was odd to see a dry river bed at the bridge but be able to hear running water upstream. All other vehicles coming thru stopped for pictures, not exploring.
The beginning is tricky for this route; getting from the bridge to the creek bed. We kept trying to follow the trail down, only to be cliffed off. So, follow the trail UP, over to the cave, THEN down to the creek bed.
In the canyon, we only went a ½ mile or so before stopping at a sandy beach. The boulder hopping/climbing was fun and challenging. Found the flies to be unnervingly persistent. Instead of flying away when swatted at, they would crawl along our faces. We had to physically remove them off our faces. In truth, this was more humorous than obnoxious.
We left Fish Creek after a few hours to keep on schedule for our afternoon plans. In retrospect, staying down in the canyon and scratching the other plans would have been better. Running water, cool breezes, ample shade, sandy beach, frogs, fish, bouldering – Fish Creek. |
