The destination, the largest Petyroglph site in Nevada and possible in the western U.S. Along the way I spotted several labor intensive Rock Walls in the middle of nowwhere. Wild Horses run free and are interesting to watch and listen to them communicate(look for them in the scenic photo shots). The area is so vast many times I would hear them and then try to locate them visually. The route was to take Long Valley out of Virginia City Highlands in Storey County, Nevada. After a long rough, strickly 4 X 4 adventure, out on foot. As I arrive, I realize I am not alone. At work is a group, http://www.nevadarockart.org , these volunteers are documenting the Petroglphs. They have been at it for 5 years, part time. Using a grid search type system you will notice blue tags in some of the photos as they continue the process. They welcomed me and offered explanations as well as free rein of the area. They suggested there are over 10,000 petroglphs at this site making it one of largest and most important sites in the west. These Petroglphs are deep in the rock and are quite possible 10,000 to 15,000 years old. A great day, and other than two flat tires on the way out, no surprises. Be prepared. |
