| no partners | | After turning my first overnight backpack into a day hike, I was left with an extra day, well kind of. I decided that I could start my second overnight trip I had planned a day early and since the miles and AEG were not overly ambitious for this trip, I decided I would check out a previously unknown trail that I had come across in my previous day's hike.
The trail was Hagan Canyon Trail #31. My plan was to hike it as far as I could or to its intersection with Strayhorse Canyon Trail. The trail drops very quickly as do most of the trails that plummet off the eastern terminus of the rim. I was half expecting to go about one mile and be turned around by impassable trail, or nonexistent trail, as that is the case for many trails in the Blue Range. Much to my surprise the trail ended up being in pretty good shape and it was very scenic and enjoyable. I felt like there was more hardwood than pine, but I loved the contrast of the two and there was enough water to keep the dog happy and the trail interesting. We made it to the intersection with Strayhorse no problem and I contemplated an exit out of Lengthy Canyon Trail #89, but I know the Blue Range too well and was not about to commit to an uphill climb through an unknown canyon and on an unknown trail. The grade back was fine for pretty much being all uphill, with the most strenuous portion coming in the last half mile. I am working on a full description for trail and will post shortly. |
