| no partners | | We wanted to do the Miners Needle loop but figured that the Peralta Trailhead would be crazy with the search efforts for the missing hikers so we opted for this loop instead.
I'm glad I grabbed a bunch of coordinates for geocaches near the trail before leaving to make things more interesting for the five kids we brought with us. The geocaches broke the hike up into smaller chunks and kept the kids engaged as they took turns carrying the GPSes.
With the extra bit of trail to get on to the loop (parked at the Meridian trailhead) and some extra walking to find the geocaches we ended up at just over 9 miles (a new record for my girls). We went clockwise around the loop to save the better part of the hike for the end. The trail on the front side of Usery isn't very interesting but the views and variety on the backside are fantastic. If we ever do this again, I think we might just go out and back on the backside. We ran into a couple deer on the trail and spotted 7 horses below us when we were on the backside of the mountain. |
