The marshy areas were really buggy this morning but after that steep climb you are rewarded with some great views of the surrounding areas. This trail is known among Appalachian Trail Hikers for it's arduous incline. You must endure 1.5 mile 1650 ft climb before you can throw yourself on the boulder and view the prize of the New River. The first overlook view is blazed in blue just as you pass thru the top large boulders hard right and thru the rhododendron path it opens to a lone boulder hop on it and enjoy the rest. Next you won't want to miss since you are already there, backtrack to the boulders and head on up to Wilburn Valley overlook. It's only a little over a half a mile up. There is a sign that leads to a spring on the right but you can catch that on the way back out if you choose. |
