I'm guesstimating that the trip was 25 miles (one way) from the visitor center and took us about 2 hours. The only reason that I'm posting this triplog with so few statistics is because I feel folks should be warned about the situation before driving the road. We had heard about this road while researching things to do in BBRSP. There are several Youtube videos to watch. Looked interesting. Looked fun. Looked remote. All true. What we didn't know, nor did the person at the visitor center choose to mention, is that it is truly a (very skinny) one-lane road on very steep mountainsides with only one place along the way that's wide enough for two vehicles. In other words, if you're going up (or down) and someone's coming in the other direction....Well, that's a lot of seriously scary backing up for one of the vehicles! As the passenger for the drive out, I was on the outside. I closed my eyes three times as the dropoff was so steep. The road, I should also mention, is not maintained. There were a few places that the road was washed out on the outside (probably the spots where I shut my eyes). Having said all this, it was fun, interesting, remote, and the sign at the end was a laugh. I would advise only two vehicles go up at a time as there is limited space at the end to turn around. Be safe! |
