Hurricane Dolly was adding lots of moisture to the mountains and making climbing unpleasant with all the storms. Plus, its nice to take a break. So I headed up to Wyoming to Devils Tower. Devils Tower is a volcanic intrusion that has been exposed through erosion. Its about 867 from its base to its top.
There are two trails which encircle the base of the tower. The Tower Trail is paved and pretty level, and the Red Beds Trail is dirt and had about 200' of AEG. I did the tower trail in the evening of the 30th after I arrived at the monument and made my dinner in the parking lot at the visitor center. I took no pictures. The next morning with hundreds of tourists and families descending on the tower I opted to do the Red Beds Trail instead of the Tower Trail. I think I enjoyed it more, but the views of the tower aren't as good. The Red Beds Trail leaves from the visitor center and drops down to the Belle Fourche River before entering the area of exposed and eroded red sandstones above the river. It then climbs back up to the tower base and returns to the visitor center. It was pretty hot and humid the day I did this, quite a reversal of when I was in the area 8 years prior. When I was in northeast WY and western South Dakota I felt like I was in Mississippi rather than the west.
