| partners | | We went back to Palo Duro for one day to finish up the three trails that we have not done yet. Two of these trails are along the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River and the third along the west side of the canyon along the park road. There was a lot of rain in the park the last few days and the river had overflowed the inner banks and had flowed onto the lower flood plain. Therefore the trails in spots were pretty muddy. We finished up these trails in about 4 hours averaging about 3 MPH while hiking. I was surprised we had an ARG of about 600 feet because they are pretty flat trails, I guess if you go through enough gullies it adds up. Along the Juniper Cliffside Trail we stopped off to investigate the park cave. This little side treck of about a quarter mile takes you to a cave formed by water draining through the harder upper rock surface and eroding the softer under layer. It is actually a small washout about 50 feet deep. It is a good thing we got this hike done when we did because the 2+ inches of rain a few days ago flooded the park pretty good and when we got back to Lubbock it rained another 3.5 inches, not sure how much Palo Duro got but they usually get more.
Not sure where else there is to go for hiking around Lubbock since we hiked all the trails now in Cap Rock Canyon, Palo Duro Canyon and Lubbock Lake. Any other places to hike are 3 to 4 hours away. |
