Right off the bat, Face trail ain’t no party, ain’t no disco, ain’t no fooling around. It averages 1000’ of AEG over the four miles to the summit of Table Mountain. My Garmin Fenix 5 was clocking 1700’ at the 1.35 mile point.
Bee said that trekking poles were highly recommended; I rarely use mine, and was happy I brought them. We were a little surprised at the number of hikers on trail due to the extreme elevation gain at higher altitude. This is a great wildflower hike too, with high density and diversity of flowers.
After taking time on the summit to enjoy the views we started the return leg, at just past the junction of Face trail and North Teton 024 we found out from a couple that had mistakenly hiked up N Teton intending to hike up Face tr that it was passable with only one sketchy snowfield to cross. Bee had wanted to return via N Teton, but all the recent trip reports recommended against it.
N Teton didn’t disappoint, great views, hiking most of the way near running water, and without the very steep decent the Face trail offered. It added an extra two miles, yet was well worth it.
My poles with snow baskets still in place were greatly appreciated. |
