| no partners | | | Had heard of this cool arch for several years now. After scratching our Coyote Gulch backpack plan because we wanted to bring the dog along, we decided on a series of Escalante-area dayhikes. We wanted to do this hike plus the Dry Fork slots in the same day, but because our campsite was in shade until late, we got a late start every day. We did this hike in the middle of the day, but there was decent shade most places except The Bypass and the sand dune on the way in/out. The hike itself was pretty easy with just basic canyon bottom hiking and an easy-to-follow path across The Bypass. The only difficult parts were trying to bushwack through willows every once in a while, but even that wasn't too hard. Didn't drink enough water; probably should have pounded another liter of water while on the hike, but it wasn't too bad. I'd love to do a backpack, maybe a loop with Fortymile Gulch, at some point in the future. Got out of the canyon at three thirty. By the time we got back to the Dry Fork turn-off on the Hole-in-the-Rock road, we decided to just keep cruising and head home. It wouldn't have taken long to do the slots, but as it was we got home at 9:30, and we had friends coming the next afternoon that we hadn't cleaned up for! Oh well, next time, right? |
