| no partners | | I biked out to the Salt Flat trailhead for the Pine Mountain Wilderness from the pullout just before Little Ash Creek. I've always wanted to check out Pine Mountain Wilderness but had read that the road could be very rough. On this day however, the road was in pretty good condition. Yavapai county road 171 is in very good condition until its terminus with the junction of FR 68E. This is where FR 68 begins which is also in good condition. I only saw one vehicle on my way in.
When I got to Salt Flat trailhead there were several trucks, a skid steer, and an excavator. I had lunch at the picnic table by the creek and stashed my bike somewhat out of sight so I could briefly hike the Nelson Trail before having to turn around so I would have plenty of time to bike back to my truck before dark. On my hike in I ran into a man on his way out. We chatted for a moment and he explained that the owners of the private parcel that the Nelson Trail goes through are improving the trail out to their property so they can access it easier by vehicle. I believe he also said that they are looking to build on this land. He did also say that he believes that they plan on still allowing the public to continue to use the Nelson Trail through their land. After talking to the man I continued hiking and past at least 8 more people who I assume were the land owners and some contractors.
Sycamore Creek was running and Nelson Place spring was beautiful as well as a couple other springs right of the Nelson Trail still on the private parcel. The hike and bike pack to the truck were pleasant and uneventful. Next time I'll just drive my truck out to Salt Flat. |
