We added a couple of miles by exploring the cliff dwellings that are roughly to the east southeast of the Sycamore trailhead. Not hard to find. Just work your way around the predominant peak overlooking the canyon.
Ruins were in excellent shape and the view of the snow-capped peaks from the ruins was spectacular. The hairy part was the vehicle shuttle. Perkinsville Road was in pretty good shape. The turn off to FR 181 ends that cake-walk abruptly. FR 181 goes 6 miles to "Henderson Flat" and then continues to the trailhead. We didn't see any sign for Henderson Flat, but the entire road ran for close to 13 miles. Some zealous tractor-operator has built burms about every 500 feet in some parts. So unless you want to catch some air, you have to poke along pretty slowly. It took us over an hour to get down FR 181 alone! Excellent hike and scenery though. |
