Quick overnight birding getaway with Santa Rita Lodge as my basecamp, as usual.
Had a couple hours work in the morning, so I didn't reach the area until about noon. I went straight to the De Anza Trail at Tubac bridge, intending to add Rose-throated Becards to my year list (I saw them once before, a few years ago). The Santa Cruz River was barely hanging on here, but the habitat is bonkers - absolutely teeming with life and activity, even in the oppressive mid-day heat. Spent about two hours meandering and enjoying myself ... I did see a Becard - sitting above a pair of nests - and also got my first Yellow-billed Cuckoo of the year.
Next I hit Sahuarita to pick up a few items, then on to the Canyon and the Lodge. Birded the feeders for a few minutes before I even went to my casita, and met a few of my fellow guests ... Mary had just arrived from Florida for her first visit to SEAZ, and she was already pretty dazzled. There was also a trio of mammalogists from back east, here for a conference in Tucson ... and later another mammalogist all the way from Switzerland would join the group.
I spent an hour or so hiking the canyon Nature Trail solo ... the creek only has water in a few sparse places - I sure hope monsoon fires up for them this weekend as expected.
Back to the Lodge and the feeders in time to catch a surprise Violet-crowned Hummingbird! Pretty rare visitor for Madera Canyon - I've only seen them at Paton's in Patagonia before - and a thrilling score for my new friend from Florida, where they generally only get one kind of Hummingbird. Mary and I and two of the mammalogists wandered across the street to the owner's house to scope out the power pole in front for the famous Elf Owl ... had to go up the stairs into his yard, since the current nest hole is on the backside, facing his house. Soon Steve came out and said we were welcome - but the owl wouldn't come out until about 8pm ... Mary abruptly had her long travel day catch up to her, and took off for bed but two of us went back and enjoyed watching and photographing the owl with Steve. I'd heard and recorded Elf Owls before, but this was my first look at one - they are the smallest owl species in the World, at less than six inches in length and weighing barely over an ounce ... but they are fierce predators all the same.
Plenty of deer in the canyon as usual, but surprisingly no coatis seen this time ... and apparently I just missed a small bear near the Lodge while I was hiking downstream.

This trail is suppose to run from Santa Gertudis Lane up to the Tubac Presdio State Historic Park, but we found that it crosses the Santa Cruz River in a couple of spots, and the signs say not to enter the river. I think maybe some bridges were washed out or something. We went from the bottom (Santa Gertudis Lane) up as far as we could, backtracked, then drove up to the State Park, and hiked down as far as we could and backtracked again making for about 8 miles total.

This is a great birding location, even though we were there on an off season we saw plenty of birds. It is also a bit of a cooler hike since it does roughly follow the river and has large trees throughout the hike.

Followed up an appointment in Tucson with a bit of birding and a night in Green Valley.
Did a different portion of the De Anza trail than last time ... looking for Rose-throated Becards, but no luck.
Quite the Cottonwood and Willow jungle here - great spot even in the middle of the day. Heard tons more birds than I could see.
Also saw bunnies, one deer, squirrels, one toad, lizards, stink-bugs, and large numbers of grasshoppers and butterflies. And two other birders.

There are several rare birds worth chasing right now along the Santa Cruz between Tubac and Tumacacori, so after spending the night in Marana I headed way south on the 19.
Stopped at the Green Valley Water Treatment Plant to try and see the Fulvous Whistling Duck - very rare for AZ - that has been seen there for the past week or so. While signing in at the plant office, I ran into the same nice lady I met a few weeks ago on my first visit to Whitewater Draw ... we both dipped on (missed) the GBAN there, but this chase would be a different story. As soon as we parked and got out of our cars, the FWDU was just right there, exactly where he was supposed to be, hanging out with his Mexican Mallard and Ruddy Duck buddies! After 20 minutes of chatting and photographing him, we were like ok - CHECK - that was almost too easy! :y:
Continued south to the Santa Gertrudis Lane TH of the de Anza trail and walked along the river to the spot where some other birders were looking for the Yellow-green Vireo - alas, it hadn't been seen or even heard all morning.
My first time along the Santa Cruz - despite being poo water from Mexico, it's nice enough ... so lush and green it doesn't feel like borderlands. Might have seen a Thick-billed Kingbird, but photo not good enough to say for sure.
Hopped in the car and drove past both Tumacacori NHP and Tubac SHP - probably should have stopped for quick visits, but they don't have birds so I drove right past.
Parked near the Tubac bridge, next to the lady from earlier at the water treatment plant - didn't actually run into her this time, and her car was gone when I got back.
Hiked north on the de Anza to where I thought the Rose-throated Becards were supposed to be nesting. By this time my phone was almost dead so I couldn't look up exact directions, or even listen to Becards call on my app - I was pretty clueless. I was also getting very hot, hungry, thirtsy, and a little bug-bit. I did see a nice juvenile Cooper's Hawk, a male Summer Tanager, and a pomegranate tree.
Really neat area - I will be back when it's not so warm!

Morning walk around town with my mom, brother Mike, his girlfriend and her daughter
After breakfast, we all walked to the village and did some browsing
Before heading back, I went a mile and a half in on the de anza trail, then returned
The trail wasn't great; more interesting checking out the residential areas
Nice weekend down here with family
Also a very nice view of the santa ritas

This morning I joined a hiking friend and her husband for a change-of-pace hike on the Anza Trail along the "mighty" Santa Cruz River. After dropping a car at the Tumacacori Mission we drove back to Tubac and began our 6.5 mile mostly-one way southbound hike at the Tubac Presidio.

Nadja had initially wanted to go to Las Cienegas National Conservation Area to look for Huachuca Water Umbel, a grass-like plant on the endangered species list. However with the LCNCA closed as a result of the Sawmill Fire she thought that we might find this rare plant along the Santa Cruz River between Tubac and Tumacacori although it was a long shot.

We hit the Juan Bautista De Anza Trail around 7:00am when there was still a cool breeze. This wide riparian area, with it's huge cottonwood trees and other lush vegetation, is quite a contrast to the surrounding desert. Mesquite trees also grow abnormally large here.

One thing I noticed almost immediately was some patches of fall color in the tops of the cottonwoods, perhaps due to drought conditions.

As we hiked from Tubac to Tumacacori we were able to access flowing water in Santa Cruz River at several locations along the trail. Shortly after entering national park land the Anza Trail goes through an area of very dense tree canopy, mostly from large mesquite trees. When we got to the mission junction we took the short spur trail to the "River Access" where there were numerous birders. Once back on the Anza Trail we continued southbound, crossing Santa Gertrudis Lane, for about another mile to another lush area with flowing water but no birders.

As nice as this hike is there are two negatives. First, although this portion of the Santa Cruz River has a clear perennial flow, the stream is "reclaimed water" from the Nogales International Wastewater Treatment Facility. Second, there are areas where past flooding has accumulated large quantities of trash and tires.

Although we never found any Huachuca Water Umbel, it was an enjoyable and shady morning hike nonetheless.

...just another crummy day in the Sonoran Desert !

This morning I led my community hiking club on the Anza Trail from Tubac Presidio State Park to Tumacacori National Historic Park. This 4-mile one-way segment parallels the Santa Cruz River crossing it twice. Although this portion of the river has a perennial flow, the water is courtesy of treated effluent released from the Nogales International Wastewater Treatment Facility. Nonetheless the water supports a rich, lush riparian area with huge cottonwood and mesquite trees which were fully leafed-out. Bird calls were ubiquitous throughout our 8-mile round trip hike.

There are many junctions along the Tubac to Tumacacori segment but the trail is well-marked thanks to the Anza Trail Coalition, so it's pretty easy to figure out. This segment of the trail is a level and relatively shady hike, portions of which are under a tunnel-like tree canopy. The trail was very dusty/sandy in areas and the short, shallow "river" crossings were made easy by wooden planks or well placed boulders. (Note - this hike can be very muddy and slippery after a recent rain.) Our turnaround was at Tumacocori National Historic Park where we found a docent to give us a guided tour of the mission and grounds. BTW, we saw many poppies in bloom along the access trail to the mission. Also near the mission junction is a spur trail to the east which ends at a very scenic and tranquil location on the Santa Cruz River.

We stopped in Tubac for a post-hike fuel-up at the Tubac Deli where we enjoyed ice cream and freshly baked pie. The cherry pie was awesome and might have been the best I've ever had (except for mom's of course)!

Ahh, another hike out of my Boots and Burgers book. I left my house around 3AM :o and had no takers :( . I started the hike around 6AM. This is just a sample size of a trail that went all the way to San Francisco at one time. This section is between Tumacacori National Historical park and Tubac Presidio State historic Park.
The hike had tree cover for the majority of the hike and crosses the Santa Cruz river a few times. Nice stroll and lots of birds singing. I enjoyed it. I saw 3 or 4 Cardinals and 5 Javelina and a raptor that wouldn't let me take a pic.
I have to say though, they need a clean up project for part of this area. There are some areas where the water has piled up a lot of trash. There was also some houses after mile 3 that took a little away from your ambiance.
The two parks both open at 9am. I finished my out and back then checked out the two parks. The Mission was really cool but there wasn't much left of the Fort. Both places had Museums better then I expected. Cool stuff!
After that I went to Wisdom's Cafe on my books recommendation. They didn't open until 11am. I got there about 5 till so that worked out fine. Burger was good but they are known for their fruit burritos. I got one to go so Grace and I could share it when I got home. MmmMmm. Nice little road trip! :y:

Since I was down in Tumacacori for the Festival and planning to go to Tubac for the luminaries anyway, the trail seemed to be the way to go. Hitting it at dusk was a good idea, the cottonwoods and cienega were excellent in that light. Lots of cool old structures back in there. I found a layup...not too surprising, it looked like it hadn't been used in a while.
